A Photo Tour Of The United States
Through Twin Cities City Street Signs

By John Weeks

Introduction Many cities use a naming scheme for city streets in order to make the street arrangement easier to remember. Minneapolis has a number of segments where street names are in alphabetical order. In other areas, names of trees and famous generals are used. One that interests me is the series in the northwest metro area that is named after US States, and a second group named after US States in northeast St. Paul. Here is a photo tour of those street signs.

Note that not all states have streets named after them in the twin cities metro area. Also, some street names are duplicated between cities. Streets in Minneapolis have been given preference in those cases. Some state names are shortened, such as Hampshire for New Hampshire and Jersey for New Jersey. North and South Dakota are both represented by Dakota St NW and Dakota Ave S, respectively. That still leaves four states that are not honored by having a Twin Cities area city street named after them.
