The US-14 and US-61 Mississippi River crossing between La Crosse, Wisconsin,
and La Crescent, Minnesota, covers a distance of 3 miles. The path
includes causeways, islands, two large main channel structures, and these
two secondary channel bridges over the West Channel of the Mississippi
River.
Wisconsin considers this to be two independent bridges on US-14.
Minnesota reports these as two independent bridges on US-61. As a result,
there are a total of four NBI database entries. Wisconsin owns the
westbound span, while Minnesota owns the eastbound span. The eastbound
span was planned to be completed shortly after the westbound span, but
the flood of 1993 interfered. As result, the westbound span opened more
than a year later, and was not totally finished until 1994. These two
bridges replaced a single 1931 steel through truss bridge.
