The Bridges And Structures
Of The Chesapeake & Delaware Canal

First Edition — July 2010

C & D Canal

C & D Canal Structures
We visit the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in this installment of my Bridges And Structures series. Unlike some of the rivers that I have followed, such as the Mississippi River, the C & D Canal is relatively short at only 14 miles in length. It is, however, regionally important given that 40% of the shipping in and out of the Port of Baltimore uses this facility.

Despite being a critical piece of national infrastructure, the C & D Canal is accessible to the general public, both from the water and along both shores. It is possible to see the entire canal in one afternoon, and you can get up close to see every canal structure. These structures include a set of seven large bridges including a state-of-the-art cable stayed expressway bridge near Saint Georges. This makes the C & D Canal a must see for any road geek or railfan when visiting the east coast of the United States.
