SR-71 Blackbird
March Field Museum
Riverside, CA

SR-71

SR-71 on display at the March Field Museum. The museum is on the grounds of the March AFB, just east of Los Angeles. The entrance to the museum is off of Interstate-215.

This photo is actually a double exposure. If you look close, you can see an image of an SR-71 in flight. That is NASA 844. This photo represents on of the biggest photography disasters that I have experienced to date. I flew to CA to see the final flight of the SR-71 at the Edwards AFB open house in October 1999. The roll of film that I used to shoot the airborne shots of the SR-71 was somehow damaged, and the camera ejected the roll of film. It also left a leader sticking out when it rewound. Since I was in a hurry to capture more SR-71 images, I simply tossed this roll of film into my bag, intending to take care of it later. Due to the heat of the day and being tired, I forgot to do anything with this roll of film. The next day, at March AFB, I was looking for a new roll of film to take photos of the SR-71 at the museum. Well, I had one roll that looked new, so I used it. When I got these pictures developed, I realized that this was a horrible mistake. The roll that looked new was the damaged roll of the SR-71 demo. That means that I messed up both the SR-71 demo photos from Edwards (which are irreplaceable since it was the last flight of the SR-71), and I messed up the photos from the March Museum.
