For puposes of organization, I have broken the river in to six smaller sections as follows:
| East Metro | —From Hastings to South St. Paul. | |
| St. Paul Upper Landing | —Structures fully within the city of St. Paul. | |
| Mississippi River Gorge | —The gorge formed by the St. Anthony Falls. | |
| St. Anthony Falls | —The St. Anthony Falls area downtown Minneapolis. | |
| Port Of Minneapolis | —North of the falls area to I-694. | |
| West Metro | —North of I-694 heading to Elk River. |
Unlike other installments of the bridges and structures, I tried to capture every bridge that comes in contact with the Mississippi River in the metro area. This includes park bridges, bridges crossing back channels, and bridges that are parallel to the river flow. I only use my own photography, which is part of the trick of doing these bridges and structures web pages. One has to do the travel to seek out and find the bridges as well as doing the research on their history and writing the stories.
