Notes - source states initial construction in 1855 for Illinois Central
Railroad. Considered to be a major engineering achievement.
Rebuilt in 1893. Abandoned in the late 1970. Now used
as a spur to a concrete factory owned by Buzzi Unicem. Interesting
pier design where truss sits on different set of piers than the
adjacent deck truss section. Bridge was converted to deck trusses
in 1893. Height was determined by clearance needed by the canal.
When the 9 foot navigation project came along, the main river span had
to be at least 65 feet. Piers were raised to lift the deck trusses.
Main span was built in place of an existing deck truss section, and
short pony plate spans were added to cross the gap between the deck
truss and through truss section. This explains the funny piers.
